Ricky Gervais

Whether or not you watch the Golden Globes because they serve as a fairly decent barometer for who will win Oscar gold or because the presence of alcohol exponentially increases the chance of a tawdry acceptance speech, this year one of the most pressing reasons to check out Hollywood's biggest party can be summed up in two words: Ricky Gervais.

The British comedic genius - yeah, I went there - killed it when he only had five minutes to work with as a presenter at last year's ceremony and had audiences doubled over in laughter when he took his Emmy back from Steve Carell in 2008. Sample dialogue: "I sat through Evan Almighty - give me my Emmy." Classic.

Here then are 10 likely phrases, remarks, gestures, sounds and jokes the talented comedian will probably utter during his time as the host of the 67th annual Golden Globes. Keep in mind that while this list is nowhere near scientific, it is based on many, many hours spent studying the craft and wizardry that is the Gervais. We'll be keeping score at home and so should you!

During the Golden Globes, Ricky Gervais will likely:

1. Make a self-deprecating remark about his non-celebrity status and how he’s an unknown in a sea full of famous faces

2. Threaten to make a Holocaust joke while calling attention to the taboo nature of Holocaust jokes and how they should be avoided

3. Call out Steve Carell in some capacity since he accepted the Best Comedy award on Gervais’ behalf two years and stars in the American version of “The Office” in the role originated by Gervais

4. Casually mention “The Office” and how he created the hugely successful sitcom that has spanned countless imitators the world over (could be combined with a Steve Carell call-back in a two-for-one deal)

5. Rub his fingers together to make the international sign for ‘I’m plenty rich now’

6. Blatantly promote/talk up his latest film Cemetery Junction, coming soon to a theatre near you…

7. Include his pals Stephen Merchant and/or Karl Pilkington in either a pre-filmed sketch or walk-on bit

8. Drink a pint on stage – or at least have one handy

9. Raise his voice in an irritated falsetto followed by a high-pitched cackle

10. Make reference to his weight and/or the media’s nickname for him - Chubby funster
