Sarah Fortin's 'Synthétiseur'

Montreal's Sarah Fortin cleaned up at the 2009 enRoute Film Festival with her film Synthétiseur, an 11-minute introspective look at a single girl navigating the city as a tourist, winning Best Short Film, Achievement in Directing and the grand prize.

Now in its third year, the festival allows emerging artists access to an immense, and captive, audience as the winning films are played on the seatback screens during all Air Canada flights from July to December.

Alongside Fortin, Edmonton's Leigh Ann Maynard picked up kudos for Achievement in Cinematography with her film A Season to Wither, Toronto's Alain Huynh's won Achievement in Animation for Intermedium and Jake Chirico, also from Toronto, won Best Documentary for his piece The Freshwater Plague.

Along with bragging rights, Fortin picked up a new car and, along with all of the winners, was awarded an all-inclusive trip to the Palm Springs International Film Festival, courtesy of Air Canada.

About her wins, Fortin had this to say: “To be included in this group of talented filmmakers was such an honour so I am extremely grateful to Air Canada and enRoute for selecting me as the recipient of the Best Short Film award.”

The best of the year's submissions were screened at Scotiabank Theatre Toronto on October 21 before the awards ceremony moved to The Drake Hotel, where filmmakers, industry movers and shakers, jury members and sponsors, like Cineplex Entertainment, celebrated the work of these talented artists.
