James Franco to guest on a soap opera - for reals

Talented thesp, part-time bookworm and full-time crazy-handsome former "Freaks and Geeks" fave James Franco has a surprising new acting gig on a soap opera, of all places.
For a reason that isn't immediately discernible, Franco will be making a trip to "General Hospital", and guesting on the popular, long-running soap for a two-month story arc starting during November sweeps.
Riiight.
Executive producer Jill Farren Phelps was quoted as saying to AP that it's "an honor that an actor of Franco's caliber would choose to spend some of his valuable time in Port Charles." Well, obvs.
Who follows a stellar slew of projects, including a standout performance in Milk and a hilarious comedic turn in Pineapple Express, with a stint on the type of show that serves as a launching pad for novice actors? This is a head-scratcher and then some.
I can't imagine Green Goblin's son is short on cash or interesting acting offers so maybe he's just having a laugh and doing a soap for the hell of it? He's never been one to bask in the self-aggrandizing glow of fame and has always been rather private and low-key so who knows what motivates the former Daniel Desario.
But the fact that he's starring as Beat poet Allen Ginsberg in the forthcoming Howl and ALSO playing a mysterious stranger - is there any other kind - within a TV genre that continually favours illogical and impossible storylines in the name of cliffhangers makes him even more enigmatic.
James Franco, what WILL you do next?
