30 rock

-- 2009 Emmy nominations announced Tina Fey is poised to bring home more hardware as her irreverent show-within-a-show "30 Rock" leads this year's Emmy nominations with a rather humbling 22 nods, on the heels of the show’s four wins last year. Other impressive contenders include AMC's uber-stylistic '60s series, and last year's winner for best drama, “Mad Men”, which racked up 16 nods. And the Emmys showed some serious love for first-time nominees, among them Seth MacFarlane's cult fave "Family Guy", only the second animated series ever to be nominated for best comedy, as well as zany musical sitcom "Flight of the Conchords" and CBS laffer "How I Met Your Mother" both earning inaugural nods in the same category. In the acting category, Elisabeth Moss (“Mad Men”) and Jim Parsons (“Big Bang Theory”) were honoured with their first Emmy noms in the drama and comedy genres, respectively. Much like the Motion Picture Academy, the TV Academy opened up the number of nominees in the main categories, from five to six, making room for shows and actors who may have otherwise been overlooked. HBO again stood tall amongst the other networks with 99 nominations, followed by NBC with 67 noms and ABC with 55. The Emmys will be handed out on September 12 and hosted by, wait for it, supporting actor in a comedy nominee, Neil Patrick Harris! Will you be watching?

-- Brüno declared immoral in Ukraine Sacha Baron Cohen's Brüno is getting no love from Ukraine's Ministry of Culture and Tourism after his pic about a flamboyant gay fashion journalist was deemed "immoral", thanks to explicit shots of genitals, intercourse and obscene language. According to Variety, the comedy has been banned, likely out of fear of offending religious members of the population. Brüno opened last weekend to a surprisingly strong box office, winning the weekend battle in North America and making (US) $58.4 million worldwide. Universal Pictures also anticipated concerns about restricting the film to those over 18 in the UK and announced that it would be releasing an edited version, minus a minute and a half of scenes with strong sexual content, to play alongside the raunchier version. Ukraine's ban comes two years after Baron Cohen's last culture-skewering effort Borat saw similar restrictions in Kazakhstan and Russia.

-- Toronto music doc asks community to contribute Canadian cinematic visionary Bruce McDonald (Hard Core Logo, The Tracey Fragments) is teaming up with fellow Canuck (and movie institution) Don McKellar (Last Night, Child Star, Blindness) for This Movie is Broken . Admittedly, the idea of a crowd-source music doc is not entirely novel (The Beastie Boys' 2006 I F---in' Shot That immediately springs to mind) but McDonald and McKellar are poised to put their spin on the genre with Toronto mega-group Broken Social Scene. McKellar is writing the script and McDonald is directing the film, which follows a couple who attend a BSS show during the summer in Toronto, and will be at least partially shot by the Torontonians themselves. "The idea behind the film is to create a portrait of a hot July day in Toronto and so over the next few weeks we’re looking for you to help us out by capturing footage from around the city,” reads the film's official website. “We are interested in the weird and wonderful images that define for you the Summer of 2009." How cool is that?
