After a brief Dish hiatus, we're back with the latest movie buzz. Hope you haven't missed us too much...
- Foster to direct Mel Gibson in The Beaver! Jodie Foster is poised to step behind the camera for the first time since 1995's Home for the Holidays and direct recent tabloid-darling and erstwhile-pal Mel Gibson in The Beaver. The two met while filming the seriously ridiculous but hysterically funny film Maverick (don't believe me? Watch it!) back in 1994 and have remained friends since, though they have not worked together on another project until now. The film deals with a depressed man who finds solace in wearing a beaver hand-puppet. In addition to directing, Foster plans to take on the role of the man’s wife. The quirky film is set to start shooting in September but no studio has stepped forward to back the picture, so that date may be pushed back. Putting all judgments and issues with his personal life aside for a mo', I've been hoping Gibson would put down his helmer hat and step back in front of the camera and, given his adeptness at quirk (see Lethal Weapon and Conspiracy Theory for examples), I'm thinking this just might be a very interesting project for him to do just that. Though it won't be his first foray back in front of the camera as he's scheduled to hit the big screen in his first starring role since 2002 in this coming January's Edge of Darkness. Are you still interested in seeing movies starring Mel Gibson? Or has his personal trials and tribulations dulled your interest?
- Kidman set to bring Little Bee to the big screen Despite her recent string of less-than-successful films, Nicole Kidman continues to nail down juicy, headlining roles. Variety reports the actress (and her production company Blossom Films) is set to team up with BBC Films to bring the adaptation of Chris Cleave's acclaimed novel "Little Bee" to the big screen. Kidman is set to take on the starring role of one-half of an affluent British couple who wander away from their resort only to encounter a Nigerian orphan who changes their lives forever. While the rest of the film has yet to be cast and a director yet to be hired, the screenplay is going ahead and will be penned by Shawn Slovo (Catch A Fire). This is only the second film produced by the actresses newly formed production company while the first, Rabbit Hole, is set to be released sometime in 2010.
