Spider-Man musical

-- Evan Rachel Wood and Alan Cumming join Spidey musical Marvel's web-slinging superhero will make his Broadway debut with the help of two newly-announced actors, according to Empire Online. Evan Rachel Wood (The Wrestler) and Alan Cumming (X2: X-Men United) are joining the Julie Taymor-directed musical as Mary-Jane and Green Goblin, respectively. Both are rather astute choices considering their musical pedigrees: Wood proved her vocal chops in Across the Universe and Cumming is himself a talented actor, singer and dancer who won a Tony for his role in Cabaret and wowed in Taymor's Titus and The Tempest adaptations. Who exactly will be donning the skin-tight red and blue suit still remains a mystery although Jim Sturgess' name has long been linked to the part and he has reportedly attended workshops with U2's Bono and The Edge, who are writing the music. Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark is set to begin previews February 25 with an official date yet to be announced.

-- Spielberg and Smith's Oldboy remake in trouble The head-scratch-inducing duo of Will Smith and Steven Spielberg recently secured the rights to Chan-Wook Park's 2003 hit Oldboy and were, as these things often go, planning to make a Hollywood adaptation until they hit a legal roadblock. The Korean film production company behind Oldboy, Show East, are being sued by the original manga publisher Futubasha but production is moving forward, according to Reuters. Futubasha are alleging that Show East never had the legal right to negotiate a remake of the popular story by Nobuaki Minegishi and Garon Tsuchiya. To make matters worse, Show East has apparently shut down and its CEO, Kim Dong-Ju, has disappeared. DreamWorks secured remake rights from Mandate, who acquired them from Universal.

--LaToya Jackson scene cut from Bruno In a rare display of sensitivity, the makers of Sacha Baron Cohen's latest controversy-courting pseudo-doc Bruno decided to cut out a scene that involved a female member of the Jackson clan out of respect for Michael Jackson's recent passing. The cut was reportedly made prior to the film’s premiere at Mann's Chinese Theater and actually happened last-minute, in the projection booth. While it was initially unclear if the scene would appear in subsequent screenings when the film opens July 10, a Universal spokesman has confirmed that the scene will remain on the cutting room floor. Early feedback of the scenes in question reported that while Cohen's eccentric fashionista was interviewing LaToya, he took the time to scroll through her cell phone looking for MJ's digits while in another scene she is seen eating sushi off a naked man. Somehow, I doubt this will adversely affect the box office.
