Me and Orson Welles

-- Zac Efron is cute and influential The Disney babe, now all grown up with a starring role in 17 Again added to his resume, has been named one of TIME Magazine 's 100 Most Influential People, alongside such notables as George Clooney, Oprah, M.I.A., Brad Pitt, Tina Fey and Michelle Obama. Claire Danes, his co-star in the forthcoming period piece Me and Orson Welles, wrote a heartfelt, and rather insightful, piece about the toe-tapping heartthrob, in which she compared him to Leonardo DiCaprio: "I saw the simmering ardor of the teenage masses turn into unbridled hysteria after Titanic was released. But this was even more intense. The difference, I realized, was that Zac is not only an actor but also a musician, a bona fide song-and-dance man. We ladies are defenseless against such a combination. He is going make us swoon for many years to come."

-- Jim Carrey in The Beaver and Jodie Foster may direct? Though the role was originally supposed to be played by Steve Carell, with Jay Roach (Meet the Parents) at the helm, The Hollywood Reporter claims that Mr. Ace Ventura himself is in talks to take over the lead role. The much-hyped script by Kyle Killen - which follows a man's relationship with his beaver hand puppet whom he looks on as a confidante and friend a la Lars and the Real Girl - has attracted a handful of directors, though perhaps the most surprising is Jodie Foster. The Oscar winner has Little Man Tate and Home for the Holidays under her belt and lensing this quirky tale would definitely signal a shift in her career. Producers are apparently looking to start shooting this year but locking down a director would have to come first.

-- Fox Searchlight to Whip It! Drew Barrymore's directorial debut will have its premiere October 9, 2009 thanks to Fox Searchlight. Whip It!, based on the book Derby Girl by Shauna Cross, is about a misfit (Ellen Page) who finds an escape from small-town ennui when she happens upon a roller derby in a nearby city. The film also stars Marcia Gay Harden as Page's mother, Jimmy Fallon as an announcer named, wait for it, Hot Tub Johnny, while Kristen Wiig, Juliette Lewis, Zoe Bell and Eve lace up to play the roller girls.
