Videodrome

-- Videodrome 2.0 David Cronenberg's weirdo cautionary sci-fi classic Videodrome is getting the remake treatment 26 years after its initial release. The film follows sleazy cable exec Max Renn (James Woods) who stumbles upon a snuff broadcast that ends up being more than a depraved TV show, altering viewers’ perceptions by actually inflicting brain damage - only Cronenberg, right? The revamped version will be scripted by screenwriter Ehren Kruger (The Ring, The Brothers Grimm) and, according to Variety, "will modernize the concept, infuse it with the possibilities of nano-technology and blow it up into a large-scale sci-fi action thriller," which should surprise no one. Did we mention that, as it stands, Cronenberg has no involvement in the remake? Probably a smart move.

-- Thank you for being a friend Legend of the small screen and pioneering feminist icon Bea Arthur died of cancer at the age of 86 in her home in LA on the weekend. Before she was Dorothy on “The Golden Girls”, and even before she played the titular character on CBS's “Maude”, Arthur was a Tony-winning stage actress whose husky baritone and imposing stature made her instantly recognizable and anything but a typical leading lady. When “Maude” debuted in the early '70s, it dealt with taboo subjects like infidelity, abortion and abuse in a forthright manner, along with plenty of laughs, earning Arthur the title of feminist - one she wasn’t entirely comfortable with. When “The Golden Girls” premiered in the ‘80s, Arthur was introduced to an entirely new generation, who saw that old age doesn’t have to mean shuffleboard and knitting circles. Arthur played the level-headed Dorothy, whose hilarious interactions with Sophia, Blanche and Rose earned her an Emmy in 1988. She will certainly be missed.

-- Lingerie by Courtney Love Even as a former Courtney Love enthusiast, the jokes sort of write themselves here. Teaming up with famed photographer/sometimes film director David LaChapelle, everyone's favourite former grunge princess will be opening up her own lingerie store in Hollywood and has already apparently locked down the location. Now all she needs is actual customers - zing! But who knows, right? Maybe Love has missed her calling and she'll turn out to sell sexy wares along the lines of Agent Provocateur and give Victoria's Secret a run for its money. If Love were to combine her fierce rock and roll side with her slightly skewed and gritty version of girly, she could end up offering lingerie with some serious edge. Would YOU wear lingerie by Courtney Love?
