Quentin Tarantino

(Dimension Films)

-- Cannes will be full of Basterds - Quentin Tarantino's super-stylized WWII shoot-em-up Inglourious Basterds has been invited to compete at this year's upcoming Cannes Film Festival. The much-hyped flick stars Brad Pitt as the leader of a band of Jewish-American soldiers hell-bent on spreading fear throughout the Third Reich by brutally killing, and scalping, Nazis. The trip to the Riviera would be a homecoming of sorts for Tarantino who rose through the ranks to become an A-list director after his debut, a little film called Pulp Fiction, won the Cannes Palme d'Or in 1994. He also served as president of the festival jury in 2004 and premiered the original full-length (read: 3 hour-long) version of Kill Bill at Cannes. This year's festival runs from May 13 to 24. -- ShoWest Update – Disney Part II Everyone's knows that the House of Mouse set the golden standard for fairytales long ago but that hasn't stopped them from taking the genre to new, exciting and progressive places that dazzle kids and adults alike. ShoWest audiences were treated to a clip from their forthcoming The Princess and the Frog , a story that follows Princess Tiana (voiced by Anika Noni Rose), as she comes of age in New Orleans' French Quarter during the Jazz Age. The character also represents an important milestone for Disney as she represents their first African-American princess. With voice work from the likes of Oprah, Terrence Howard and Keith David, hand-drawn animation and a timeless love story, young girls everywhere may just yet have a new favourite.

-- Wolverine: Coming to a laptop near you Fox has confirmed that a full-length, high-quality work print was leaked online yesterday, aka April 1, despite X-Men Origins: Wolverine 's official May 1 release date. The superhero flick focuses on the clawed mutant's origins (played by a rather ripped and sinewy Hugh Jackman) and represents the X-men series' first spin-off. As a testament to the rapid-fire viral possibilities of the web, Wolverine was downloaded over 100, 000 times before it was removed. The stolen version has been deemed “incomplete” by the studio - green screen and effects issues were reported - and thanks to having their content 'forensically marked' Fox is confident they will able to find out who sprung the leak. The FBI and MPAA have been called in to investigate. (BBC)

Groundhog Day

A scene from 'Groundhog Day'

-- Groundhog Day the musical? You just may be singing along with Bill Murray's prickly weatherman if the 1993 Harold Ramis comedy gets the musical treatment. Stephen Sondheim (Sweeney Todd) expressed interest in taking the comedy about an arrogant TV star who's stuck reliving the same day and adapting it into a stage production - but that was five years ago. All is not lost, though, as Ramis recently revealed that co-screenwriter Danny Rubin has been working on a book for a musical and he himself has been contacted by writer-director James Lepine about a Groundhog Day musical. No word yet on Sondheim's involvement. My money's on a lavish "I Got You Babe" closer. (MTV movies)

-- Christopher Nolan adds trio to 'Inception cast The Dark Knight director has added a stellar trio of talented thesps to his Batman follow-up, described as a "contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind"..erm, right. Though that description is a little on the cryptic side, Nolan, who wowed early on with the labyrinthine Memento, has the chops to make it sing. Oscar winner Marion Cotillard, Irish beau Cillian Murphy and Canadian It Girl Ellen Page are all in talks to join Nolan's cast, which already counts Leonardo DiCaprio among its ranks. The film is set to go into production next year.
