Penn joins ‘Three Stooges’ remake - really

Sean Penn

Sean Penn is certainly a chameleonic actor, inhabiting the skin of whomever he's tasked to play whether it be a beloved surfer-stoner, a death row inmate or an endearing political revolutionary. But it's safe to say no one saw this casting news coming as the multiple Oscar winner has signed on to play Larry in MGM's remake of The Three Stooges.

According to Variety, the Farrelly Bros have locked down the typically acerbic Penn to play the tousled Stooge and are eyeing Jim Carrey to take on the role of rotund funnyman Curly, which with Carrey's rubbery features and slapstick roots, seems like a more plausible fit. Apparently the Canuck comedian is already packing on the pounds - 40 of 'em to be exact - to more closely embody the portly fellow.

And what of Moe? It seems Peter and Bobby Farrelly have Benicio del Toro in their crosshairs, who has proven his range with more comedic roles in the likes of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Usual Suspects and Snatch.

The Stooges remake has been somewhat of a passion project for the minds behind There's Something About Mary and Shallow Hal, with the Farrellys shopping the project to no less than three studios over the past ten years.

Instead of going the biopic route, the film will build on the classic short films, with production set to begin in early fall with an expected 2010 release date.

This is Penn's first comedic role in 20 years (!) with 1989's We're No Angels representing his last stab at bringing on the funny.
