MacGyver

New Line has announced plans to revisit the cult television adventure series and develop it into a feature length film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The show, which centered on the laid-back, resourceful secret agent played by Richard Dean Anderson, was a successful Monday night staple from 1985 to 1992. Two made-for-TV movies followed closely behind in 1994.

Although it has been 15 years since the agent has appeared on any screen, big or small, the lead character’s often-spoofed ability to escape life-threatening situations by using common household objects have kept the show soundly on the pop culture radar, most recently in the form of the popular SNL segment, “MacGruber” starring Will Forte.

With this announcement, "MacGyver" becomes just the latest ‘80s icon to experience a re-imagining, following the recent but unsuccessful revamping of fan favourite “Knight Rider”.

There are no stars attached to the project as of yet but the studio has high hopes for the success of the film if they can develop a script that stays true to the iconic feeling of the original. "We think we're a stick of chewing gum, a paper clip and an A-list writer away from a global franchise," said New Line spokesman Richard Brener in a statement.
