The film that broke several box-office records, has amassed a slew of awards (including a Golden Globe for Heath Ledger) and is nearing the $1 billion mark in worldwide sales is returning to Cineplex Entertainment IMAX® theatres for an encore presentation beginning January 23 and running until February 11.
Christopher Nolan’s astounding superhero sequel has secured a dedicated page, if not an entire chapter, in the history books for a number of reasons – some celebratory, some tragic. But there is no escaping the tremendous impact The Dark Knight's had on the pop culture zeitgeist since it was originally released on July 18. (Watch a few notable moments from the film here.)
Batfans will no doubt be thrilled by the news of an IMAX victory lap and the chance to revisit Nolan’s melancholy masterpiece that featured a stand-out performance from Ledger, one that many say could earn him a posthumous Oscar.

Now, whether you enjoyed The Dark Knight in the standard 35 mm set-up or its supersized IMAX counterpart, the viewing options raise an interesting question: does size matter?
Sure, we as a society tend to espouse the “go big or go home” mantra, and experiencing Nolan’s ambitious part in the Batman franchise on a screen more than 16 metres high is something to behold, especially considering that portions of it were shot with an IMAX camera – a first for a feature film.
But some would rather pass on the flashiness of the big, big screen and enjoy their tasty dose of Christian Bale-in-a-Batsuit in an average-sized setting: remember, good things do come in small packages.
So where do you sit on the 35mm vs IMAX debate? Have you seen The Dark Knight on a regular-sized screen and consider yourself a film purist or do you believe that IMAX is the only way to go? Share your thoughts and join the discussion below! (Find out my thoughts on The Dark Knight: The IMAX® Experience.)
And see where it all began with Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins on DVD – part of the “Batman Bundle” that includes a ticket to the limited engagement encore IMAX presentation of The Dark Knight.
