Just when you were starting to worry that you hadn't heard news of an ’80s TV show being repackaged as a feature film in at least a week, Variety comes to the rescue.
The trade paper has announced that Twentieth Century Fox will bring “The A-Team” to a theatre near you as a summer 2010 blockbuster to be assembled by a, wait for it, crack A-Team of their own.
Joe Carnahan (Narc, Smokin' Aces) is set to direct the pic, while Ridley Scott and his brother Tony Scott have signed on as producer and exec producer, respectively.
After some initial issues with settling on a director - John Singleton was attached early-on - Fox is now set to forge ahead on reworking the series about four Vietnam vets who escape from a military prison after being wrongly convicted and vow to help the innocent.
Though the film remake has replaced Vietnam with the Middle East as the site of the vets' tour of duty, Carnahan says much will remain the same - but don't expect the famously campy tone.
"This was a coveted property, and reimagining a show that I remembered as a kid was tough to turn down," Carnahan said. "Fox hired me to make it as emotional, real and accessible as possible without cheesing it up."
"You can ... make a film that reflects on the real world without losing the great sense of fun and the velocity of action in a classic summer popcorn film.”
Although there is no cast currently attached to the project, the interweb has been buzzing with rumours that Woody Harrelson and Ice Cube are in talks, though neither actor has confirmed.
“The A-Team” movie is set to start production this summer in time for a 2010 release.
