Twilight New Moon

Hot on the heels of Summit's announcement that Golden Compass helmer Chris Weitz will direct New Moon, a flurry of concern has erupted on Twilight fansites the interweb over, where worried fans are already voicing their apprehension.

But the author that launched a million vampire crushes, Stephenie Meyer, was quick to dismiss any "Twilighter" anxiety over the fact that Catherine Hardwicke - the original film's director and up until recently the expected New Moon lenser - has walked away from the project, by going straight to her website.

Addressing the fans, Meyer says: "There's been a lot of worry and speculation on the boards lately, and I want to let you know what's going on.”

“I've had the chance to talk to Chris, and I can tell you that he is excited by the story and eager to keep the movie as close to the book as possible. He is also very aware of you, the fans, and wants to keep you all extremely happy. (Torches and pitchforks are not going to be necessary.)"

Weitz, who was also a co-director on American Pie and About a Boy with his brother Paul, is familiar with the risks of adapting a revered novel - he signed on, then dropped out of, the Compass project for fear of mucking up the material before eventually jumping back on board - and accordingly penned a letter to Twilight fans in an early bid to win over the loyal, and fiercely vocal, fanbase.

“When I saw the film of 'Twilight,' I was alternately entranced and left hungry for more. I was also struck by the extraordinary passion for the characters, story and theme that was evident in the people sitting in the seats around me. My job is to live up to that devotion."

And he does not shy away from the specific criticism that questions whether Bella's uniquely female concerns, emotions and voice will be properly filtered through a man's perspective: "To those who doubt that as a male director I can capture Bella's experience, I can only say that emotion is universal and that my work has often involved working with some of the most talented actresses in the world."

New Moon is set to rise November 20, 2009.

    • I think Chris Weitz should be able to do a great job, i haven't read the gloden compass but i saw the movie and i thought it was very good and it won a few awards. Who knows maybe he can make New Moon more then just another "teen movie". And to be honest i didn't like Catherine Hardwicke as the director i think she ruined the movie as well as whoever the screen writers were.
