Eddie Murphy to star as The Riddler?

Eddie Murphy

Hold onto your capes, people, Eddie Murphy may be joining the cast of Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight follow-up.

British tabloid The Sun has reported that Murphy - best known for being provocatively funny in the '80s and then exclusively starring in either kids' movies or roles that involved fat suits and heavy prosthetics in the ensuing two decades - has been cast as The Riddler, the role originally hammed up to epic proportions by Jim Carrey in 1995's Batman Forever. Although Johnny Depp was originally rumoured to be donning the question mark suit, apparently the spandex one-sie has been passed to Murphy.

The Sun also reports that Shia Labeouf will star as loyal sidekick Robin and Rachel Weisz's name has been floated around as a possibly purrfect Catwoman - both of which seem slightly more plausible casting choices than adding Murphy into Nolan's film noir take on the Batman franchise.

Many a blog has called The Sun's Murphy casting news complete bogus aimed at stoking (even more) interest in the film, but only time will tell whether or not Norbit lands in Gotham City.
