Nicole and Charlize

Though many a mind has fantasized about the, ahem, pairing of Nicole Kidman and Charlize Theron, it stands to reason that few would have imagined their union in these terms.

The two talented and attractive leading ladies will join forces in The Danish Girl playing husband and wife, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Based on the true story of early 20th century Danish artists Einar (Kidman) and Greta (Theron) Wegener, the film tells of what began as Einar harmlessly stepping in for his wife's female models and continuing the ruse once portraits became popular in the 1920s. Despite the innocuous origins of Einar’s cross-dressing, their marriage was put to the test once he decided to make the transformation permanent, becoming the first post-op transsexual.

Kidman will star and produce the film, to be lensed by Anand Tucker (Shopgirl) and adapted by writer Lucinda Coxon from David Ebershoff's 2000 best-seller.

Theron and Kidman have previously won acclaim for their portrayals of homosexual characters, earning Oscars for Monster and The Hours, respectively.

The independently-produced film is now in pre-production.
