Jaden Smith to wax on, wax off

Jaden Smith

Move over Ralph Macchio, and to a lesser extent, Hilary Swank - Jaden Smith is the newest Karate Kid.

Will Smith's 10-year-old son, who co-starred alongside his dad in 2006's The Pursuit of Happyness, will don the white karate uniform and matching headband for the 1984 classic that’s being revived as a starring vehicle for the young thesp.

The elder Smith will act as producer on the latest incarnation of a franchise that launched Macchio's career, three sequels and a little something called The Next Karate Kid, starring future two-time Oscar winner Swank.

Screenwriter Chris Murphy has vowed to stick close to the original story that follows a bullied boy who learns the ways of self-defence from an eccentric mentor, the late Pat Morita, and learns valuable life lessons along the way. Luckily, Jaden already comes into this film with karate experience under his, well, belt.

The film will begin shooting next year in Beijing.

    • Can't imagine The Karate Kid without Mr. Miyagi.
      The Hilary Swank version stunk!
This will inevitably follow in the footsteps of other childish martial arts films. I wish the best for Jaden Smith as I hold his family in high regard. I hoped however that Will Smith's son, if he choose to follow his Fathers path, that the role's chosen would be unique rather then run of the mill.
