Hollywood can breathe a sigh of relief – Steve Guttenberg is returning to the big screen franchises that made him a household name.
Though the somewhat forgotten funnyman hadn't completely turned his back on the spotlight in the ensuing two decades since his last major movie role – he did, after all, direct and star in P.S. Your Cat is Dead and TV movie Single Santa Seeks Mrs. Claus – he recently revealed to Britain's The Sun that audiences can expect a lot more Guttenberg. Question is, do they want him?
Those still clinging to their VCRs will remember Guttenberg helped usher in two hugely successful ‘80s film series that may returning to a theatre near you.
He told The Sun: “We are doing a new [Police Academy] movie and it is going to be great fun. A script is being written and so far it is really great, everyone from the original movies who is still around will return.”
Few may recall that members of the original cast include current A-listers Kim Cattrall and Sharon Stone, who have, unsurprisingly, not yet signed on for Police Academy's eighth version. Guttenberg himself threw in his hat after Police Academy 4, though he says he has nothing but “good memories” of playing Sgt. Carey Mahoney.
But the cartoony misadventures of inept cops isn't the only comedic sequel Guttenberg plans to resurrect.
"Tom Selleck, Ted Danson and I are looking to make another Three Men And A Baby movie. It’s called Three Men and A Bride," he told The Sun. "The script is pretty much written and we are really keen to get that made. We’re very hopeful.”
And really, who can blame him? Hope would be the word on everyone's lips when trying to sell a wholesome rom-com starring a trio of aging actors eighteen years after the characters were put to bed. Godspeed, Guttenberg.
