The Farrelly Brothers, the once crude, loopy minds behind such gross-out comedies as Dumb and Dumber and There's Something About Mary, want to bring low-tech slapstick back with the help of the world's most famous bumbling trio, reports Variety.com.
After five years in development limbo at Warner Bros., Peter and Bobby Farrelly have finally received the go-ahead from MGM to move forward with The Three Stooges movie adaptation and will direct, produce and serve as writers, along with Michael Cerrone.
The format of the forthcoming comedy will reflect the original Stooges bite-sized portions, with three installments of 25-30 minute shorts that place Larry, Curly and Moe in the present day, while maintaining their iconic look, and will aim for a PG or PG-13 demographic.
Physical comedy will naturally account for much of the laughs, something the Farrellys do rather well, and this time around even their method of casting Curly is worthy of a few giggles.
Peter Farrelly revealed that an “American Idol”-style search for the most physically demanding Stooge is how they’ll find their man - we kid you not - with auditions in four or five cities culminating in casting the winner in LA. A second contest will also be held to determine what comedy shorts will appear before the feature presentation, in an effort to maintain the varied film programming that was common back in the day.
This likely kid-friendly flick serves as more proof that the brothers Farrelly are growing up, sort of, or at least playing to a very different crowd.
The Three Stooges comes down the pipe November 20, 2009 – up against Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlock Holmes – followed by Walter the Farting Dog, starring, wait for it, the Jonas Bros, set to open in 2010.
Good luck, Farrellys.
