Raffaello Follieri, better known as Anne Hathaway's ex, has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison after pleading guilty to 14 counts of wire fraud, money laundering and conspiracy, reports People.com.

Follieri, 30, was arrested in June and accused of lying to investors about being the CFO of the Vatican and using the stolen funds to pay for a trip to the Dominican Republic on New Year's Eve 2006 with Hathaway (The Devil Wears Prada, Rachel Getting Married) and another couple.

He also treated his father by taking care of his orthodontic bills and used the apparently swindled cash to pay for his own medical bills and a $37,000-a-month apartment.

The Italian native had more noble intentions when he first started a business aimed at buying property from the Catholic church but became "intoxicated with it all" said Flora Edwards, Follieri's lawyer.

Although he could have faced up to a staggering 265 years in prison, his plea agreement held that he give up almost $3 million in funds obtained through illegal means and forfeit a dozen watches and other pieces of high-end jewellery.

Hathaway made light of the recent drama when she hosted “Saturday Night Live” earlier this month, joking: "I broke up with my boyfriend, and two weeks later he was sent to prison for fraud. I mean, we've all been there, right, ladies?"
