The North American movie-going masses have gone to the dogs with box office topper Beverly Hills Chihuahua, Disney's playful romp about a spoiled pup, Chloe, who gets lost in Mexico and has to rely on the local pooches to get her home.
The family flick walked away with $29 million (all figures US), a figure that represents Disney's best October showing, according to Variety.com. Voice work from the likes of Drew Barrymore, Andy Garcia, George Lopez and Cheech Marin, alongside on-screen thesps like the effervescent Jamie Lee Curtis and Piper Perabo, spelled big screen success for the adventure-comedy.
Up against seven new pictures opening on the same weekend, Chihuahua bested Eagle Eye, which dropped to second place from the top of its perch last week, and teen rom-com Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, starring Michael Cera and Kat Dennings, opened in third spot, with an estimated $12 million.
Richard Gere and Diane Lane's romantic pas de deux proved strong and held onto the fourth spot with $7.3 million while Appaloosa, the Ed Harris-directed Western that stars Viggo Mortensen and Harris himself, placed fifth.
On the niche interest side of this weekend's films, Religulous, Bill Maher's acerbic look at organized religion, grossed $3.5 million while the Anne Hathaway starrer, Rachel Getting Married boasted a gross of $302,934, both films exceeding expectations and getting "off to impressive starts on the specialty side," according to Variety.
