Batman's little buddy is finally being ushered into the spotlight by the CW TV Network, according to Variety.com.

The executive producers behind “Smallville”, Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson, and McG, the prolific producer/writer/director who brought you Charlie's Angels, its sequel and a slew of teen-minded shows like “The O.C.”, “Chuck” and “Supernatural”, are giving Robin the prequel treatment.

Much like the focus on Clark Kent before he became Superman on “Smallville”, "The Graysons" will delve into Dick "DJ" Grayson's life before he donned the bodysuit, tights and cape and started hanging around some guy who called himself Batman.

Robin lore tells of a young boy growing up within an acrobatic family -The Flying Graysons - who loses his parents when their trapeze equipment is sabotaged by a gangster. Fellow orphan Bruce Wayne investigates the crime and subsequently mentors the young boy, teaching him to battle the bad guys.

But Souders and Peterson are giving his back story a more contemporary feel, choosing to focus on universal challenges like first loves, dealing with family and confronting bullies in what Variety called "an original take on the character."

This isn't the first attempt to tackle the Batman mythos on the small screen.

The CW's predecessor, the WB, previously tried to spin a show around Batman's story with 2002's short-lived “Birds of Prey”, which involved female superheroes who came to Gotham's rescue when Batman disappeared.

    • It'll be interesting to see if McG can pull it off... I'm just not convinced there is enough depth in Robin as a character... Maybe Adam West will make a guest appearance.
