Slumdog

Director Danny Boyle has another award to put on his mantelpiece. Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire won the $15,000 Cadillac People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Known for more grittier fare including such films as Sunshine, Trainspotting, Shallow Grave and 28 Days Later, Boyle’s ‘Millionaire’ follows a teenage orphan from Mumbai who is suspected of cheating when he is one question away from winning India’s version of ‘Who Wants to be A Millionaire?’.

The first runner-up for the award was Kristopher Belman's More Than A Game and the second runner-up was Cyrus Nowrasteh's The Stoning of Soraya M. Both won a $15,000 cash prize and a custom award.

The City of Toronto-CityTv Award for best Canadian feature film worth $30,000 was given to Rodrigue Jean's Lost Song, a film about a young family facing depression and other challenges in rural Montreal. The more personal story beat out the bigger budget Paul Gross war story Passchendaele.

A special citation was give to Atom Egoyan’s Adoration. The movie chronicles a teenager’s quest to uncover his family's cloudy past.
