Ricky Gervais, Oscars® host?

The king of awkward comedy and the inimitable mind behind BBC's "The Office" and "Extras" was undoubtedly the best thing about the 60th Emmy Awards on Sunday night.
Now Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Ricky Gervais' delivery as a presenter was so impressive, there's talk he could host the 2009 Oscars.
The deadpan-funny Brit took a faux face off with Steve Carell to new heights of comedic discomfort, demanding NBC's "The Office" star return the Emmy that Gervais won - and Carell accepted - last year. When Carell stoically refused, Gervais tore into him with rapid-fire quips that included digs to Carell’s poorly received film Evan Almighty and the fact that he currently stars in a show created by Gervais.
"I made you what you are and I get nothing back. I sat through Evan Almighty, give me my Emmy back.”
Apparently shortly after the hilarious bit, Gervais' reps were inundated with questions about his schedule and availability and were encouraged to set up a meeting with the powers that be at the Academy Awards HQ.
And, according to his official blog, Gervais is all for it.
"A huge thank you to all the press who said I should present the whole show next year. I'll do it if Carrell [sic] does it with me. And I'll write it too, with Steve, Jon Stewart and a couple of “The Simpsons” guys. I'll do the Oscars too."
Consider our fingers crossed.
Gervais is currently starring in the haunted rom-com Ghost Town alongside Greg Kinnear and Tea Leoni.
