Eagle Eye had a view from the top of the North American box office as Shia LaBeouf's latest thriller reached number one on its opening weekend.
The film jolted what has been a rather tepid box office and showed the best opening since the summer, grossing $US29.2 million, according to Variety.com.
Eagle Eye reunites LaBeouf with Disturbia director D.J. Caruso for a techie chase movie about two strangers who find themselves on the run from a mysterious female voice on the other end of a cell phone. The film also stars Michelle Monaghan, Rosario Dawson and Billy Bob Thornton.
Richard Gere and Diane Lane's romantic drama, Nights in Rodanthe, came in second with $13.6 million (all figures in US dollars) and Neil LaBute's latest look at the horrors of human nature, Lakeview Terrace, slipped to number three with a weekend pull of $7 million.
What Variety referred to as “the biggest surprise” was Christian-theme drama Fireproof, starring current evangelist and former “Growing Pains” teen idol, Kirk Cameron. The film, which centres on a couple’s last-ditch attempt to save their marriage, banked an impressive $6.5 million from only 839 theatres.
The Coen Bros.' latest screwball dark comedy Burn After Reading rounded out the top five in its third weekend in theatres, bringing in $6.2 million.
