News that Johnny Depp will be returning to the high-seas for more swaggering, swashbuckling adventures and Oprah will voice a character in The Princess and the Frog were just some of the highlights during Disney’s showcase September 24.
The Kodak Theater was the setting of Disney’s star-studded gala where upcoming projects were announced in front of industry insiders, media and exhibitors, reports Variety.com.
Along with his fourth turn as Captain Jack Sparrow, the dapper Depp will play Tonto in a forthcoming big screen adaptation of The Lone Ranger and don an oversized cap for his part as the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s 3-D Alice in Wonderland, slated for a 2010 release.
Other notable casting news involved the most powerful woman on television lending her iconic voice to a hand-drawn animated movie set in New Orleans. Oprah is set to voice the character of Eudora, the mother of the film’s heroine, Tiana, played by Anika Noni Rose.
The Mouse House also announced its plan for a sequel to Disney-Pixar’s Cars slated for 2011, a year earlier than previously proposed, and the release of five 3-D flicks over the next year with another 16 in development.
Attendees were also treated to several clips from the animated dog-hero film Bolt and a short snippet from Tron 2 that featured a cameo by the original “Electronic Gladiator” Jeff Bridges.
Along with Depp, who appeared in costume as Jack Sparrow wearing a Lone Ranger mask, Dwayne Johnson, Robin Williams, John Travolta, Nicolas Cage, Miley Cyrus and the stars of High School Musical were on hand to promote thei,r individual Disney projects.
