Hairspray

Backcomb that beehive and practice your Charleston, a sequel to Hairspray is on its way.

Quirky writer-director John Waters, who helmed the 1988 original, has inked a deal with New Line Cinema that will see the trashy auteur write a treatment for a sequel to the 2007 remake, reports 'Variety.'

Waters will be joined by returning players Adam Shankman, who served as director and choreographer, and Tony-winning songwriters Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman.

Although no cast members are yet attached to the film, the studio is interested in bringing together the same lot who lead 'Hairspray' to a $200 million-plus worldwide box office gross last summer. In fact, its box office haul broke the record for biggest opening weekend for a movie musical until it was unseated by Mamma Mia! just last weekend.

The wacky musical feature follows pleasantly plump teen Tracy Turnblad as she fights for acceptance and equality in a racially divided 1962 Baltimore while gaining fame on a local teen dance show. Part two would pick up where the original left off and revisit the colourful Turnblad clan, played in the 2007 version by newcomer Nikki Blonsky, Christopher Walken and a fat suited-up John Travolta.
