Tom Cruise may have backed out of the espionage thriller Edwin A. Salt but his dance card seems to be filling up nonetheless.

'Hollywood Reporter' reveals that Cruise is in serious talks to star in The Tourist, a remake of a 2005 French thriller which would see him play the title character.

Bharat Nalluri (Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day) will direct and Oscar-winning screenwriter Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park) will pen the tale of an American tourist who becomes entangled in a dangerous Interpol scandal.

And despite the very recent departure of Paula Wagner, Cruise's production partner at United Artists, his much talked about WWII drama Valkyrie will now see a 2008 release.

After being pushed back to February 2009 from an originally scheduled October release, a well-received screening and commercial opportunities afforded by the holiday timing will see the Bryan Singer-helmed flick open December 26, 2008.

A return to lighter fare may also be in the cards for Cruise, who is in early talks to star as a chef in the comedy Food Fight, which would mark his first lead role in the genre since 1996's Jerry Maguire.
