Facebook is moving from the small screen to the big screen.

Aaron Sorkin, the West Wing and Studio 60 writer and producer, will be penning a movie chronicling the creation and evolution of Facebook for Columbia Pictures.

The social media networking site was created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg. Zuckerberg was a student at Harvard University at the time. Once membership expanded beyond the hallowed halls of Harvard, the Internet phenomenon grew to its current state of more than 100 million active members worldwide.

Sorkin’s film will focus on the unexpected success of the site and how it changed Zuckerberg’s life forever. Sorkin announced the news on his Facebook page today.

Before access was blocked to his Facebook page, a message by Sorkin greeting readers stated:

"I just agreed to write a movie for Sony and producer Scott Rudin about how Facebook was invented. I figured a good first step in my preparation would be finding out what Facebook is, so I have started this page. Actually, it was started by my researcher Ian Reichbach because my grandmother has more internet savvy than I do and she has been dead for 33 years."
