It doesn’t matter that the film doesn’t ever reach epic status. It doesn’t matter that overall the thriller plot is just above your typical mystery crime drama. It doesn’t matter that the role isn’t a stretch at all for the grammatically challenged 50 Cent. It doesn’t matter that Carla Gugino once starred in that crappy ‘ER’ rip-off, ‘Chicago Hope’, years ago. Robert De Niro. and Al Pacino, two of the greatest actors alive today, share the screen for 101 minutes and that is all you need to know. That fact alone should sell this movie to anyone who appreciates motion pictures as an art form. The interplay between the two veterans is so effortless, it is like they aren’t even acting or reading from a script. It has to be seen to be believed or appreciated.
Normally, I am not a big fan of redos but in the rare circumstance, if the filmmakers can craft something bigger and...GULP!...actually better...I am all for it. The new Death Race is one of those rarities. The film never stalls or stops. There is no wasted motion or energy. It is non-stop, nitro-fuelled action from the opening to the closing credits.
