The Book Of Eli: Original, Inspired and Intense!

The Book of Eli is definitely one of the most refreshingly original action movies I've seen in quite a while. The movie is very heavily atmospheric, with the post-apocalyptic settings frequently brought to chilling life, and Denzel Washington is at the top of his game here as enigmatic league, Eli. The movie finely straddles the line between clever symbolism and popcorn-y action, functioning as both an intellectual film, and a movie to please those just taking it as a hard-hitting action film. The action scenes are few and far between, which may irk viewers seeking the latter, but the action scenes that are present are all very well-done! It's a slower-paced, thought-provoking movie broken up with some fighting every now and again when it comes down to it, but The Book of Eli is highly-polished and keeps you on the edge of your seat all the same. It works kind of like a more mainstream-friendly, optimistic version of The Road. Film buffs and action lovers alike should enjoy this one.

Youth In Revolt: An Ode to the Underappreciated Nice Guy

Alright, since there are no actual reviews so far and just mindless shouting, allow me to set the record straight. Youth in Revolt is NOT THAT BAD! In fact, it's pretty good, it's just rather deceptively marketed. I think it's an example of a movie that's different from what people expect from the trailers, then they see it, and get disappointed/angry. Well, allow me to clarify. Youth in Revolt is not a raucous teen comedy per se, it's more of a fun-spirited story about the crazy lengths a guy will go to for young love. Yeah, the story doesn't always make sense and it doesn't come together as well as hoped, but Youth in Revolt is a story that a lot of young people can relate to. There's a generous dose of chuckles, and some excellent performances from both Cera and Doubleday. It's nice to see Michael Cera break out of his comfort zone a little with the Francois persona as well! Youth in Revolt is mainly for established moviegoers looking for something more heartfelt and less raucous, as much as the trailers would have you think otherwise, but considering that it's January, this is one of the better movies available this month. So, now you know.

Up In The Air: The Sleeper Hit of the Holiday Season!

Up in the Air is a very good movie. It finely balances both comedy and drama in a story about human connection, and marks a very strong performance for George Clooney in the lead role, hopefully one that will lead to some awards! Anyway, the movie is rather on the intellectual side, so it's not a dramedy you can just leave your brain at the door for, making it a nice alternative piece to the crowd that would find movies like Sherlock Holmes and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel too brainless. The ending is a little unsatisfying, since the film kind of peters out and doesn't resolve several important plot threads, but it's one of the only real weak points. Despite the title, Up in the Air is kind of under the radar amidst all the big releases that came with the holidays this year, but if you're looking for something smart, different and yet still entertaining, I really recommend checking this one out. You'll be glad you did!

It's Complicated: It's Not Complicated, It's Good!

It's Complicated is a strong romantic comedy to close out the 2009 releases, and is easily the best romcom since The Proposal on that note. The actors are terrific, and while the jokes have much more of a crass and sexual stint than much of Nancy Meyers' previous works, It's Complicated is easily one of her funniest movies to date! Streep, Baldwin and Martin are all delightful, down-to-earth and highly-entertaining as the leads, and the movie even manages a few surprises that break the romantic comedy norm here and there, an impressive feat! The Office's John Krasinski also plays arguably his finest role yet in the film! With a great mix between actors, story and comedy, It's Complicated just delivers on every front in terms of another strong, memorable romantic comedy from Meyers. I recommend it!
